On the photos, we have the monument to Christofer Columbus. On the East side of Plaza de Colón, on the place called the Gardens of Discovery, we have an enormous monument for the Discovery of America.
This sculpture of 1977, the work of Joaquín Vaquero Turcios, consists of four large concrete blocks, with a total length of about 100 meters. The blocks are carved with figures, texts and key names in the history of the discovery of America. Each block is dedicated to one aspect of the discovery: The Prophecies, The Discovery and The Genesis.
On these blocks, you can read extracts from the books of Chilam Balam (Jaguar’s Mouth), interpreting the Mayan prophecy about the imminent arrival of the “conquistadors” that would come from the East.
