History Of The Name of Puerta del Sol in Madrid

History Of The Name of Puerta del Sol in Madrid

The name of Puerta del Sol, came from the time of the “Guerra de las Comunidades de Castilla” (War of the Castile Communities), between years 1520, and 1522.

This is the only square in Madrid that does not have the name of “Plaza”.

It is said that in June of 1520, the Comunero Movement began the rise. They decided to build a castle and a wall, with a gate that had a figure of the sun carved in stone.

It is also interesting to mention that the name Calle Carretas (Wagons Street), which is one of the streets that begin in Puerta del Sol, takes its name from the same incident, as the Comuneros stacked carts and wagons for defensive use, to give greater security to these doors, and to avoid the imperial invasion.
