Manzanares El Real está situado en la Sierra de Guadarrama, a 50 kilómetros de Madrid, en la cuenca alta del río Manzanares. Inmerso en la naturaleza, muy cerca del Parque Regional de “La Pedriza”.
El Castillo de los Mendoza, también conocido como Castillo nuevo de Manzanares El Real, es una de las fortalezas medievales mejor conservadas de España.
Este palacio-fortaleza fue construida en el siglo XV, cerca de la presa en Manzanares el Real.
Las obras comenzaron en 1475, con un estilo románico-mudéjar, como palacio residencial de la Casa de Mendoza, en las inmediaciones de una fortaleza primitiva abandonada.
El castillo alberga un museo sobre “los castillos españoles”, y también de una colección de tapices. Fue declarado Monumento Histórico-Artístico en 1931.
La entrada a La Pedriza, está muy cerca de Manzanares El Real y su castillo. Como era de esperar por su belleza, este parque está incluido en la Red Mundial de Reservas de la Biosfera, y ofrece uno de los paisajes más bellos de la Comunidad de Madrid.
Las acciones físicas que han ejercido sobre estas rocas durante millones de años, han moldeado estas atractivas formas. Sobre todo para los escaladores, que pueden contar con alrededor de un millar de rutas de escalada de todos los niveles de dificultad.
La visita a La Pedriza realmente vale la pena y se puede apreciar desde el coche, pero mucho mejor hacer una caminata por el inmenso parque.
