En una zona del Madrid medieval, encontramos la Plaza de la Cruz Verde, rodeada de escaleras por el desnivel de la calle Segovia, en su recorrido, que va desde la Plaza Puerta Cerrada, cercana a la Plaza Mayor, hasta el río Manzanares.
Esta plaza está ubicada en un ensanche de la calle de Segovia, cercano al Viaducto de Segovia.
Es un lugar muy tranquilo hoy, no obstante, hace siglos, tuvo una historia llena de dolor y sufrimiento, como su nombre lo indica, por existir en el lugar donde hoy vemos la Fuente de Diana Cazadora en la fotografía abajo, una cruz de madera pintada de color verde, con la que se marcaban los lugares donde se llevaban a cabo ejecuciones de la inquisición Española.
En su lugar, en el año 1850 inauguraron en esta plaza, por iniciativa del Ayuntamiento de Madrid, esta fuente para el suministro de agua potable a sus vecinos.
Esta zona de Madrid, hoy es muy recomendable por tener un ambiente muy agradable en pleno Madrid de los Austrias, con muchas terrazas para tomar algo y admirar estas calles tan castizas.
